Cameroon is home to Lake Nyos, known for a rare and deadly phenomenon called a limnic eruption. In 1986, a sudden release of carbon dioxide from the lake suffocated over 1,700 people and thousands of livestock in nearby villages. This event, one of only two known limnic eruptions in history, has spurred ongoing scientific research into gas mitigation strategies to prevent future tragedies.
Cameroon offers a unique blend of wildlife experiences, including the chance to encounter the elusive Cross River gorilla. With an estimated population of fewer than 300 individuals, this critically endangered species roams the dense forests of Cameroon's southwestern region. Trekking to observe these majestic primates in their natural habitat provides an unparalleled adventure for wildlife enthusiasts and contributes to conservation efforts aimed at protecting this iconic species.
